The first upgrade you should make to your bike

Feb 25, 2025

If you're looking for the best value-for-money upgrade for your bicycle, the answer is clear: the tires.

Yes, they might not be the flashiest upgrade, but their impact on your bike's performance, comfort, and safety is enormous. After all, tires are the only point of contact between your bicycle and the ground, which means they directly influence how it rolls, brakes, and responds on every ride.

More Performance with Less Weight

One of the main reasons to change tires is weight reduction. Take the Trek Emonda ALR, for example, which comes equipped with R1 wire bead tires weighing 360g each. If you decide to invest in a pair of Trek Aeolus RSL tires, you will reduce the weight by 150g per tire, which means a saving of approximately ⅓ of a kilo in rotational weight. And that feels much more significant than lightening any other part of the bike.

Less Drag, More Speed

High-end tires are not only lighter but also reduce rolling resistance. Thanks to advanced rubber compounds and more flexible casings, these tires decrease internal friction, which translates to less effort to maintain speed. Depending on the tire, this improvement can mean between 5 and 10 fewer watts of effort per tire, allowing you to ride faster with the same energy level.

Greater Comfort and Grip

Better quality tires also increase comfort by better absorbing road imperfections, which reduces vibration and makes pedaling smoother. In addition, they offer better grip thanks to their advanced rubber compounds, improving stability and safety when cornering and braking.

What about mountain bikes?

If you're an MTB enthusiast, the story is the same, but with an interesting twist:

Changing your tires not only improves performance but can also make your bike better suited to your riding style and the terrain you ride on.

Take the Trek Marlin 7 Gen 3, for example, equipped with Maxxis Ardent tires weighing 964g each. If you swap them for a pair of Bontrager Sainte-Anne RSL (770g each), you'd save almost half a kilo in rotational weight. This improves acceleration and maneuverability, but more importantly, you can choose tires that better suit the terrain you ride on, whether it's rocky, sandy, or rooty and slippery.

Is changing tires worth it?

Definitely yes. Tires are one of the most cost-effective and impactful upgrades you can make to your bike. Whether you're looking for more speed, greater comfort, or better grip, a good choice of tires can completely transform your experience on two wheels.

So next time you think about upgrading your bike, before investing in expensive components like carbon wheels or ceramic bearings, consider something simpler and more effective: a new set of tires.
