Maxxis Technologies: Innovation you can feel in every ride
In the world of cycling, tires are one of the most important components for performance, safety, and the overall riding experience. Maxxis has established itself as a leading global brand thanks to its continuous technological development, proven in both high-level competitions and recreational rides.
In this article, we clearly and practically explain Maxxis' main technologies, so you know exactly what you're riding and why it makes a difference.
Maxxis Rubber Compounds: The Heart of Performance
One of Maxxis' major differentiators lies in its rubber compounds, designed to offer the perfect balance of grip, durability, and efficiency.
🔸 Single Compound
Ideal for recreational and urban use. Offers good durability and consistent performance in various conditions.
🔸 Dual Compound
Combines two types of rubber:
- Harder center for greater durability and lower rolling resistance.
- Softer sides for better cornering grip.
Perfect for MTB and mixed use.
🔸 3C MaxxSpeed / MaxxTerra / MaxxGrip
Triple compound technology, designed for demanding cyclists:
|
MaxxSpeed Maximum efficiency and speed (XC and light Trail). |
MaxxGrip Extreme grip for technical conditions and downhill. |
MaxxTerra Ideal balance between grip and durability (Trail / Enduro). |

Protection Technologies: More Confidence, Fewer Punctures
🛡️ EXO ProtectionAdditional layer on the tire sidewalls that protects against cuts and abrasions, without significantly increasing weight. Ideal for Trail and light Enduro. |
🛡️ EXO+Evolution of traditional EXO. Combines sidewall protection with an extra layer in the tread, achieving greater resistance without sacrificing flexibility. |

🛡️ DoubleDown (DD)Reinforced double-ply construction, designed for aggressive Enduro and e-bikes. Much greater resistance to strong impacts. |
🛡️ Downhill (DH)Maxxis' maximum protection. Two casing layers and butyl insert, designed for extreme downhill and bike park use. |

Casing Options
The casing is the foundation upon which a tire is built. In Maxxis, casings are measured in TPI (threads per inch).
-
Low TPI (e.g., 60 TPI): more durable and resistant, but heavier.
-
High TPI (e.g., 120–170 TPI): lighter and more flexible, adapts better to the terrain, although more fragile.
-
Dual-Ply Casing: uses two layers of material to improve resistance and impact absorption, at the cost of increased weight.
Maxxis Casing Types
-
Single-ply 60 TPI: general use and recreational rides.
-
Single-ply 120 TPI: general use and competition, with a better balance between weight and performance.
-
Single-ply 170 TPI: exclusive race use, maximum lightness and sensitivity.
-
Dual-ply 60 TPI (Downhill): downhill and bike park, maximum resistance for strong impacts.
-
Dual-ply 120 TPI (DoubleDown): enduro and e-bikes, ideal for aggressive riding and enduro-style races.
Tubeless Ready (TR): Less Weight, More Control
Most current Maxxis tires feature Tubeless Ready technology, allowing you to ride without an inner tube:
-
Lower risk of punctures
-
Ability to use lower pressure
-
Better traction and control
Recommended for both MTB and Gravel.
Wide Trail (WT): Designed for Modern Rims
Wide Trail tires are optimized for wider rims (30–35 mm internal), achieving:
- More stable tire profile
- Better ground contact
- Greater precision in corners
A key technology for modern Trail and Enduro bikes.
