Essential guide to caring for your cycling helmet

Jun 4, 2024

Your helmet is more than an accessory; it's your first line of defense on the road or mountain. It weighs barely 200 grams, but its advanced engineered structure can save your life. Make sure it protects you to the maximum with these key tips.

1. Always wear it and adjust it correctly

It's not enough to just wear it; it must cover your forehead well and fit snugly but comfortably. A poorly positioned helmet loses much of its effectiveness. If you have doubts, consult an experienced cyclist.

2. Protect it from heat, impacts, and chemicals

  • Don't leave it in the car or exposed to the sun for too long; heat degrades its structure.
  • Avoid unnecessary impacts; even drops from a short height can affect its shock absorption capacity.
  • Stay away from solvents or chemicals that can weaken the materials.

3. Replace it before it expires

Helmets have a lifespan of approximately 7 years, but you should replace it sooner if it has suffered a strong impact. Never buy second-hand helmets, as you could be acquiring a damaged helmet without realizing it.

4. Wash it every 15 days (or more often if you sweat a lot)

Helmets absorb sweat and dirt, so they require regular cleaning:

  • Remove the internal pads and wash them in a laundry bag.
  • Submerge the helmet in warm water with shampoo, rub with your hands, and rinse well.
  • Let it dry in the shade on a towel, making sure the straps also dry completely before using it again.

More reasons to care for your helmet

A well-maintained helmet not only protects you better, but also:

  • Extends its lifespan: A helmet in good condition can last up to 7 years, provided it doesn't suffer impacts or degradation from heat or chemicals.
  • Ensures maximum safety: The internal foam absorbs impacts, but if damaged, it loses effectiveness. Inspect your helmet regularly.
  • Prevents bad odors and bacterial buildup: Sweat and humidity can generate unpleasant odors if you don't wash it frequently.
  • Improves comfort on every ride: A clean helmet, with well-adjusted straps and no sweat residue, will make you feel cooler and lighter when pedaling.

Make maintenance a routine and ride with confidence every time you go out. Your safety is worth it!
